Joe Hargatay is a police detective who works just for the fun of it,
investigating a murder that leads him into a dangerous underground world of drugs, models, models as escorts,
Asian and Italian mobs, and his ex-wife.
The once-notorious theatrical chestnut White Cargo was toned down for public consumption
in this 1942 MGM-ized adaptation (the property had been previously filmed in England in 1929).
More sullen than sexy, Hedy Lamarr stars as Tondelayo, the libidinous African native
girl who nearly drives rubber-plantation manager Langford (Richard Carlson) to ruin and madness.
Though warned by local English magistrate Witzel (Walter Pidgeon) not to "mammy-palaver"
with the natives, Langford falls hopelessly in love with Tondelayo, marrying her
in defiance of convention and anti-miscegenation laws. Alas, the restless

Silly jungle junk but Hedy is ravishing. If that's enough for you this is worth watching once but only once.
Hedy Lamar plays African native seductress Tondelayo, luring great white hunger Walter
Pidgeon and other sugar plantation Englishmen to do her bidding. The story and characters
are extremely corny, not to mention the rampart racism throughout the film. The only
reason to watch this film is for the unbelievably gorgeous Lamar, who was popular
in her day but sadly never seemed to have appeared in any film classics, causing
her to become somewhat of a forgotten Hollywood star.An interesting little production in which
a forewarned English man is seduced and betrayed by an infamous, seductive native-
played with viscious sex appeal by the beautiful Hedy Lamarr.
It isn't exactly brilliant, but its jungle setting and brutal climax make it worthwhile.

I was curious about this movie because of gorgeous Hedy Lamarr as
"Tandelayo", but this thing was awful, with blatant racist dialogue --
so pervasive in these bwana ungawa movies. Pay no attention to that
man behind the curtain, Frank Morgan, who played a drunk doctor, and I'll never use the word "acclimatized" in conversation again!
This movie was bad in so many ways. Reason #1, MGM decided to cast
Austrian actress Hedy Lamarr as an African native. Uh what?

Temperatures rise in the African jungle for the rubber tree plantation managers
when Hedy Lamarr shows up. It's trashy, but fun Hollywood trash as Hedy manipulates
the latest arrival who is trying to acclimatize (!!!) to his latest assignment.
